KNX at Building Scale: Why Large Dubai Projects Choose It
A building outlives every contractor who touches it. That is the argument for KNX in one sentence — here is the longer version.
The 30-year question
Commercial buildings and residential towers are 30-year assets maintained by a rotating cast of contractors. Proprietary automation ties the building to whoever holds the software keys — and in Dubai's market, that company may not exist in five years. We rebuild enough abandoned systems to say that with confidence.
KNX is the opposite bet. It is an open, certified standard with thousands of compatible manufacturers and any certified integrator can service it. The building's owner keeps leverage for the life of the asset.
What KNX actually runs
At building scale, KNX carries the unglamorous systems that dominate running costs: lighting circuits and presence detection in corridors and car parks, climate integration with VRF plant, facade shading that tracks the sun, energy metering per zone.
The topology is the point. Zoned lines behind couplers mean a fault in one area stays in that area, and a refurbishment on floor six does not touch floor five's programming. It is electrical infrastructure, engineered like electrical infrastructure.
