Why planar magnetic line sources suit a cinema
Most speakers are point sources: a cone in a box, radiating sound in all directions, loud near the speaker and quieter with every metre. In a cinema that means the front row is louder than the back and the sweet spot is one seat. A line source radiates as a tall cylinder instead, so the level falls off far more gently and every row sits in roughly the same sound field. Wisdom builds its line sources from planar magnetic drivers, a thin film driven across its whole surface, which is light enough to start and stop instantly and large enough to move serious air. The combination is what gives a Wisdom room its scale, its clarity in dialogue and its evenness from seat to seat.
It also solves a practical problem in a Dubai villa: the drivers are shallow. A Sage or Insight speaker sits in a wall cavity a few centimetres deep and finishes flush, behind fabric or an acoustically transparent screen, so the cinema can be as finished as the rest of the house.
Sage or Insight?
Sage is the flagship series: the L150i and L75i line sources for the front of a reference cinema, the on-wall L150m and L75m where the wall cannot be opened, the new ICS3FR for the ceiling, and the all-weather line source for outdoors. Insight brings the same driver technology to a smaller frame and a lower cost: the L8i line source and the P2i, P4i and P6i point sources for media rooms, surrounds and heights, and the new P3m soundbar family for televisions and lounges. Many of our rooms mix the two, Sage across the front and Insight around the room, so every channel speaks with the same voice at a sensible total.
Subwoofers, amplification and the part nobody sees
A Wisdom cinema is completed below the wall. The SCS-2 and the wider STS, SRS and S-series subwoofers are DSP-driven and placed in multiples around the room, so bass is deep and even across the seats rather than a boom in one corner; the new Sub2 pairs with the ICS3FR for rooms that must stay minimal. All of it, speakers and subwoofers, runs on Wisdom's SA-series DSP amplifiers, which carry the crossover and EQ for every model and deliver the hundreds of watts per channel a line source wants.
We specify the amplifier channels with the speakers, house them in a ventilated rack in the equipment room, and calibrate the whole system in the finished room, which in Dubai also means checking it again after the first summer.
Designing a Wisdom Audio room in Dubai
The best Wisdom rooms are designed before the walls are closed: cavity depths and framing for the line sources, the acoustic treatment behind the fabric, the screen wall for an acoustically transparent screen, cable routes to the rack, and the rack itself with the ventilation a Dubai plant room needs. We work with the architect and the interior designer from the drawings, which is why our cinemas look like the rest of the house and sound like nothing else in it. A Wisdom system pairs naturally with a Kaleidescape for the films and a madVR Envy for the picture, all on one remote through Control4 or Crestron.
